| Description | Purity >80%. Chlorhexidine (CHX) is an antimicrobial agent often used in antiseptics and dental products such as toothpaste and mouthwash. CHX completely inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) -2 and -9 at concentrations of 0.0001% and 0.002%, respectively, in a gelatin degradation assay. Inhibition of collagen degradation by MMP-8 is completely inhibited by CHX at a concentration of 0.01%. Addition of calcium to the MMP assays prevented inhibition, suggesting that CHX may act via a cation-chelating mechanism. |
