Transforming growth factor-betas (TGF betas) are multifunctional peptides that regulate growth and differentiation in a variety of cells. The transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) family of growth modulators play critical roles in tissue development and maintenance. Recent data suggest that individual TGF-beta isoforms (TGF-beta 1, -beta 2 and -beta 3) have overlapping yet distinct biological actions and target cell specificities, both in developing and adult tissues. Transforming growth factor beta mediates many cell-cell interactions that occur during embryonic development. Three TGF betas have been identified in mammals. TGF beta-1, TGF beta-2 and TGF beta-3 are each synthesized as precursor proteins that are very similar in that each is cleaved to yield a 112 amino acid polypeptide that remains associated with the latent portion of the molecule.
