Active human SUMO-I (the 1-97 amino acid region of the Ubiquitin-like protein SMT3C precursor also named Ubiquitin-homology domain protein PIC1, Ubiquitin-like protein UBL1, Ubiquitin-related protein SUMO-I, GAP modifying protein-I, GMP-I, and Sentrin-I. Human SUMO-1 (small ubiquitin-like modifier) is an 11kD protein that shares 18% sequence homology with ubiquitin. Smt3p, which is 48% identical to human SUMO-1, has been identified in yeast. SUMO-1/Smt3p is activated by a heterodimeric E1 enzyme in both the yeast and mammalian systems It has been shown that SUMO-1 can be conjugated to a number of proteins such as PML, RanGAP1, I B, FAS/apolipoprotein-1, p53, RAD51 and RAD52.
