| Description | Influenza is an acute infection of the respiratory tract caused by the Influenza virus, of which there are several different types. Influenza A causes flu in birds and some mammals and is the most virulent of the influenza types, resulting in the most severe disease. Influenza infection in humans causes chills, fever, pharyngitis, muscle pain, headaches, coughing and weakness. The virus is transmitted through the air by coughs or sneezes or through saliva, nasal secretions, faeces and blood. This particular strain of influenza is a reassortant virus that includes genetic components of the H1N1 influenza pandemic swine flu in a culture-adapted virus that has been selected for its qualities as a vaccine-producing strain.
