MART-1 is only found in melanoma, melanocyte cell lines and the retina. MART-1 is involved in melanosome biogenesis by ensuring the stability of GPR143. It plays a vital role in the expression, stability, trafficking, and processing of melanocyte protein PMEL, which is critical to the formation of stage II melanosomes. MART-1 [27-35] sequence is a very common immunogenic epitope for HLA-A2-restricted melanoma-specific tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) and may be useful for the development of immunotherapeutic strategies. |
