| Description | Interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), also known as Type II interferon, was originally identified as an anti-viral activity produced by mitogen-activated T lymphocytes. IFN-gamma has since been shown to play key roles in host defense by exerting immunoregulatory, anti-proliferative and pro-inflammatory activities. IFN-gamma is produced primarily by activated NK cells, Th1 cells, and CD8+ cytotoxic cells. Other cell types, including neutrophils, mast cells, keratinocytes, sensory neurons, macrophages, and B cells have also been found to express IFN-gamma. Rat IFN-gamma cDNA encodes a 156aa residue precursor protein with a putative 19aa residue signal peptide that is cleaved to generate the mature protein which contains two potential N-glycosylation sites. Rat IFN-gamma shares approximately 87% and 39% aa sequence identity with mouse IFN-gamma and human IFN-gamma, respectively.
